1980s: origins
Genre of emo emerged from hardcore punk in the early 1980s in Washington, DC as a reaction to increasing violence in the hardcore punk community and a sense of disaffection terhadapIan MacKaye of Minor Threat that changed his musical focus from community to individual political interests. [4] [5] Fans of Minor Threat named Guy Picciotto mendirikanRites of Spring in 1984 because it wanted to break away from hardcore restrictions that curb, and replaced it with the melodic guitars, varied rhythms, and lyrics that are very full personal outburst. Some of the lyrics of the songs Rites of Spring has become a metaphor for next generation emo musician, including themes such as nostalgia, the romantic bitterness, and despair are poetic. Concerts Rites of Spring into the arena of public outburst, the audience often burst sedu.Ian MacKaye turned into a huge fan of Rites of Spring, helped recording the only album Rites of Spring, and worked as a touring roadiedalam. MacKaye then founded his own band called Embrace that explore similar themes about self-searching and emotional release. Similar musical groups emerged after the Revolution Summer of 1985 in the Washington hardcore punk, DC.Gray Matter, Beefeater, Fire Party, Dag Nasty, Lunchmeat, and Kingface are several musical groups that play an important role at that time.

The origin of the term emo is not so sure, but at least has been known since 1985. By Andy Greenwald author of Nothing Feels Good: Punk Rock, Teenagers, and Emo, "The origin of the term emo [...] shrouded in mystery but it first emerged as a common habit in 1985. If Minor Threat considered hardcore, the Rites of Spring with a different focus, could be called emotional hardcore or emocore. [9] Michael Azerrad author of Our Band Could Be Your Life also trace the origins of the word emo: "The style of music like that soon called 'emo -core ', a term that was hated by all people involved in it, although the term and the approach it developed at least fifteen years later, and gave birth to bands countless.

MacKaye also recalled in 1985, and remember there is an article in majalahThrasher who called Embrace and other music groups in Washington, DC as "emo-core". At that time, he thought it "the dumbest term I've heard others say the rest hidupku.Teori term emo comes from the Embrace concert audience. They chanted the word "emocore" is intended as a mockery to the Embrace. [12] [13] emo Enthusiasts claim that MacKaye who coined the term emo to mock herself in a magazine, or the term is derived from the creation of Rites of Spring.

Despite this, Oxford Home Dictionary notes that the term emo-core was first used in 1992, while the term emo began to be known in 1993. Emo word first appeared in print in 1995 in the magazine New Musical Express.

Emocore specialist record companies immediately popping up in punk circles around Washington, DC, and synonymous with the musical groups who take shelter under labelDischord Records owned by MacKaye. Although most of these groups are reluctant called emo bands, they accept it grudgingly. Veteran punk Jenny Toomeymengenang "People who use [the term emo] is just people who are jealous of such a large and fanatical fans at the time. [Rites of Spring] is already there before the term emo is created, and they hate it. But there was a rarity, as when people began calling their music 'grunge', you also start the bandwagon to use the term, even if you hated it at first.

Emo glories in Washington, D. C. only lasted a few years. In 1986, most of the major bands, including the Rites of Spring, Embrace, Gray Matter, and Beefeater was disbanded. Nevertheless, the ideas and aesthetics that come from them quickly spread throughout the United States through a fan magazine (zine), recording LPs, and rumors. According to Greenwald, emo circles in Washington, DC laid the foundation for the incarnation of emo groups next generation:

What happens in Washington, D. C. in the mid-eighties, a shift anger into action, from anger pent into the internal uncertainties, from the masses who terindividualisasikan into individual masses, all in some ways a case study for the transformation of the national punk world for the next two decades. Depictions of ideas and situations, the power of music, and how people react terhadaobtam dab way bands become saturated and not fade, it all started from the first few performances Rites of Spring. Emo foundation is laid, however inadvertently, by fifty persons or more in the national capital. And in some ways, emo will never be as good as first and certainly will never be pure again. Surely, the world of emo in Washington menerimaemocore by consensus as a genre.

In later days, MacKaye and Piccioto, along with Brendan Canty (drummer Rites of Spring) to form Fugazi. Although its members related to the world of emo, Fugazi is generally not recognized as an emo band.
